Hey Guys, I saw some posts a few days ago of peolple frustrated with Katrina. I came across this livejournal and thought I'd pass it along. It's by someone, I think military, that's down in the middle of it. http://www.livejournal.com/users/interdictor/I've been updating the blog as to how Diane and I are doing although that seems kind of meaningless in light of Katrina. http://www.jasonpauli.blogspot.com/Hope you're all doing great! Moving On
Hey Guys, I think most everyone has heard now but Diane and I are moving to Pittsburgh on August 25th. We started telling people and saying good-bye last Tuesday. We're sorry it's such short notice. We're pressed to get downt here in time for our boys to start school on the 31st otherwise we'd be taking a few more weeks. I set up a blog awhile back that I'll be updating regularly that'll have contact information and a bunch of other stuff on it. Our 8+ years here in Buffalo have been great and saying good-bye is never easy. Please keep in touch and feel free to make a trip down whenever you like to stay and hang out. We'll have a huge house for you to stay at and if everything works out and indoor inground pool. Love, ~J |

MORE CAMP STUPH!!!
This is a perennial problem at camp... MAKE SURE YOU BRING SOME CLOSED TOED SHOES LIKE SNEAKERS!!! If you bring nothing but sandals or flip flops (Tara, ahem...) you'll miss out on a bunch of fun stuff. PLEASE PAY ATTENTION TO THE YELLOW SHEET!!! Pass the word along! Thanks to everyone who attended the second timers meeting tonight. Oh wait... only one person came and I already thanked him. Don't comment with stuff like, "I'm sorry I didn't make it J but I had to wash my pet catfish." I don't need your sympathy. I'm J. Not Alex. Camp will rock. I'm on the water everyday. Who's with me?!?! Give me a call at home if you have any questions. If you don't have all your stuff in I'll be by your house tomorrow to give you the frowning of your life. ~J |

Saranac Update
Kiddos, Camp is shaping up REAL fine. IF YOU DON'T HAVE YOUR MONEY OR HEALTH FORM IN DO IT RIGHT NOW!!! I just checked our weather for next week. Since Saranac is in the Adirondacks it can get cold in the summer and that will be the case. The days are forecasted to be in the 70s and 80s. The nights can go down to the 40s. So make sure you pack appropriately. My guess is it will be like shorts and a sweatshirt in the mornings, tie your sweatshirt around your waist for the day, and put it back on at night. I always tack a backpack to lug stuff around during the day. Remember second timer (or third, fourth, or fifth timer) meeting tonight at 6 with pizza. We'll be done at 7 so have your ride there. I'll probably update again for camp stuff so keep an eye out. Keep cool, ~J |

So I started reading that Purpose Driven Life book this week after being a total skeptic and cynic and thinking it would be sheer drivel. This mother is blowing me away. If anyone out there wants a copy let me know and I'll give it to you free. I read this today. I'm printing out part of it to hang up in the house so it sinks in more. It deals with the Biblical idea that life is a test. Character is both developed and revealed by tests, and ALL of life is a test. You are ALWAYS being tested. God constantly watches your response to people, problems, success, conflict, illness, disappointment, and even the weather! He even watches the simplest actions such as when you open a door for others, when you pick up a piece of trash, or when you're polite toward a clerk or waitress. I'll try to write more tommorrow. You miss a lot when it's out of the context of the book. I'm going to look for tests tomorrow and try to pass. ~J |

Funny Arguments
I found this while doing a google search on evidence for Christianity being false. The blog looks cool. Check out the comments. It reminds me of the stupid statement of, "There is not right or wrong." Why is it stupid? Ask youself if the statement is right or wrong and you'll see why. ~J P.S. The blog is at http://christiancadre.blogspot.com/2005/02/tactics-no-true-scotsman-fallacy.htmlWednesday, February 16, 2005 Tactics: "No True Scotsman Fallacy" fallacy Time to talk some X's and O's. Ever run into this kind of argument? Skeptic: "I reject Christianity because of the evil things Christians have done in the name of God." If you respond with something to the effect, "those were not true Christians who did that" ... be prepared to be accused of committing a logical fallacy. The ostensible fallacy is called the "No True Scotsman Fallacy" (NTS). I have never personally had this term used on me ... but I have faced variations of the underlying argument. As far as I know, this is a contrived fallacy that does not exist in any logic textbooks ... it just floats around on the web. It gets its name from this formulation of the purported fallacy. Claim: "No Scotsman puts sugar on his porridge". Countered with: "My friend Angus is a Scotsman and likes sugar with his porridge". The following rejoinder to this exception is: "Ah yes, but no TRUE Scotsman puts sugar on his porridge". In other words, the definition of a Scotsman is twisted to mean whatever you want it to. Likewise, the argument goes, we Christians are guilty of shifting the definition of Christian around to avoid the embarrassment of the crusades, inquisitions, and witch trials. What is really going on here? Is this really a fallacy? How would you respond? Sound off in the comments. I will add my $0.02 there. |

The Now Famous Young Life Banquet
Dudes and Katherine, Like always it's that time of year for the famous Young Life Banquet. It's a magical evening where Young Life presents itself to all kinds of folks from the Northtowns area spreading the word about what they do and hopefully raising a good bit of money as well. Now we need your help. We need all the Club kids we can get to come and help spread the word. You'll get a bunch of free pizza, wings, and pop for your trouble. How's that? It's being held on Thursday March 10th at the Classics 5 banquet hall on Niagara Falls Boulevard about a mile or two north of the 290 on the right. The time you have to be there is 6pm. We'll talk about it more at Club but I wanted to get the word out asap. Lata, ~J |

10 Looooooooong Months Later... Mission Accomplished
Friends, Diane gave birth to Mason a little after 11am this morning. This next comment is hard to appreciate unless you've heard numerous labor and delivery stories but Diane is the BOMB when it comes to delivering babies! The midwife that delivered him said she should have more because she's so good at it. Mason weighed in at 8 pounds 12 ounces which is a bit on the big side. Wonder where that comes from? ~J |

I've been reading a book by Eugene Peterson called A Long Obedience in the Same Direction: Discipleship in an Instant Society. I've been getting a lot out of it. I read the following this morning and it appealed to me in the sense that I've been struggling how to minister to people that are so apathetic in different areas of their lives. I can see that apathy is based to a large extent on feelings so this resonated with me in that sense. It also brought to mind how many people wanted to do work crew and summer staff last July but now don't "feel" like it. Personally when I do what I "feel" like doing I feel like crap. Eugene says: Feelings are great liars. If Christians worshiped only when they felt like it, there would be precious little worship. Feelings are important in many areas but completely unreliable in matters of faith. Paul Scherer is laconic: "The Bible wastes very little time on the way we feel." We live in what one writer has called the "age of sensation." We think that if we don't feel something there can be no authenticity in doing it. But the wisdom of God says something different: that we can act ourselves into a new way of feeling much quicker than we can feel ourselves into a new way of acting. Worship is an act that develops feelings for God, not a feeling for God that is expressed in an act of worship. When we obey the command to praise God in worship, our deep, essential need to be in relationship with God is nurtured. |

The Love Doctor is In
Friends, I saw all the stuff about love lately and thought I'd post something. Read it through because I had a great idea for you all come to me while washing dishes. Yeah I know, the big man that used to flip telephone poles now has dishpan hands. I feel like new man nowadays. As you read this keep in mind what I've seen: Over 12 years of teenagers being in "love" and trying to figure it out along with dozens, maybe hundreds, of broken lives getting more broken in the midst of it. Plus the fact that I've been a VERY happily married man for over 12 years more in love with his bride now than when we first met. Also keep in mind that what I've told many who read this about their relationships... turned out to be true. I think I've got my street cred here. With that in mind one of the most valuable things you can do in regards to love is try to figure out WHY you fall in love. Love between a man and a woman is a need. The Bible says it's a God created need in nearly everyone. The problem is that through personal experience that need can turn into something unhealthy and destructive. My cousin married a "broken" man. After they got divorced she realized what she had done after some counseling. She recognized she had this need to take in men in a relationship and try to help them and fix them. It's not a good thing to fall in love because you want to change someone. We ought to fall in love with who someone is and not who we want them to be eventually. With that in mind we need to examine ourselves and our need for love. If that need takes an unhealthy turn it most likely comes from our experencies growing up. This happens very often with children of divorced families for a number of reasons. Here's the great idea. A few years ago a few people at Knox got hooked on a book called "The Five Love Languages." It helped a lot of them figure out where their relationships, many of them married for years, had been going wrong. It's great book for looking at yourself and figuring out your love "needs." Diane read it and when I asked her if it'd be a good book for a high school Bible study she said yes. Recommend it to your leaders if you're in a small group. I'm going to recommend it to them at our next meeting. Even if you're not in relationship it could still be incredibly healthy for a little healthy self examination. ~J |

Young Life Work Crew This Summer
If you're in high school and would like to do Work Crew at camp this summer you MUST attend three training meetings. The dates for the meetings are the following Sundays from 1-2:30 at Knox: February 13, 20 and 27. If you attend all three meetings you do not have to do work crew but to do it you must be at these meetings. We had a lot of people say they wanted to do this and now's your chance. It's an amazing opportunity to serve God, serve others, meet some amazing people, and grow closer to Jesus. Give me a call if you have any questions. If you know Tara Cloutier you can ask her about her experience last summer. I'll post some stuff for college kids that want to do Summer Staff within the next week. To find out more about Work Crew and Summer Staff go to http://www.younglife.org/Camping/CampRes/CampVolunteer.htmIn fact if you go here and you're in college you can apply for Summer Staff online. |

CAMPAIGNER WEEKEND
Helloooooo! If you're planning on going on the big weekend February 4-6 then get your stuff to me right away. I've got to get some numbers in. Spread the word. Remind the folks in your small groups. So far myself, Jen K. and Dawn are going and that's no good because Dawn wears goofy P.J.'s all the time. By the end of the week I'll post the dates for Summer Work Crew training and stuff college kids will need if they want to do Summer Staff. Remember meet at Knox at 6:15 Saturday night if you want to carpool over to see P.W. on Grand Island. That reminds me, one last thing. Keep in mind that Diane is ready to give birth anytime now. So if I'm not around Saturday night or a no show to something in the next few weeks I'm probably at the hospital yelling PUSH to Diane and welcoming Mason into the world. Saturday night shouldn't be a problem but you never know. ~J |

PW will be in town to give a big old concert on Grand Island at St Stephens Church. The show starts at 7pm and it's $5 to get in. If anyone wants to car pool we'll meet at Knox at 6:15 to head over. For those of you that don't know him PW is a very talented singer songwriter. If you're into guitar playing he does a lot with alternative tunings. If you're into vocals and he has a very distinctive voice with some incredible control. And if you're into songwriting the dude is a remarkable poet. Check out his site at www.pwgopal.com |

Update on Sean and Brendan and their Mom
Mark and Jodi talked with them tonight and they passed it on to me. It looks like they lost everything. They are going to see if they can salvage any personal stuff like photos, important papers and stuff. Mark's taking the boys out shopping to get some clothes. I'll be handing Mark some money to give them. I've got around $500 which is fantastic after just one day of getting the word out. We'll be making announcements at all the services this weekend to see how much more we can get. Once Alice, their Mom, gets a handle on things we may have a list of things they'll be needing like furniture and household items. That may have to wait until next week. In the meantime feel free to lay some money on me that I can pass onto them. I'm hoping to have another big chunk early next week. Once again you can drop it off in the mail slot of my front door if Diane and I aren't around. And of course prayer is a great thing for them at this time. It's a devastating thing. They've had a few over the past few years. ~J |
